Configure IE to download more than 2 concurrent files

IE 6 has a nasty habit of preventing us from downloading more than 2 files at once. Sounds idiotic? Believe it or not, it’s true! To configure IE to allow up to 10 simultaneous downloads (it only allows 2 at a time) do the following:

1. Open Registry Editor.

2. In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

1. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

   “MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server”=Dword:0000000a
   “MaxConnectionsPerServer”=Dword:0000000a

   You can change 0000000a to any other value as long as it’s hexadecimal.

2. Close the registry editor.

Download THIS zipped file and double click it’s contents to merge it to your registry. The file will allow for a maximum of 10 simultaneous downloads.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (and make the temporary storage space smaller)

By default, IE uses a lot of storage space for temporary Internet files. Today, with the availability of broadband connections, storing old and cached content is not a must as it was in the old modem-days. Make that folder smaller. Also, we want to clear up the content of the folder each time we close XP, just to make things right.

Follow the next steps:  

1. Right-click Internet Explorer on the desktop and choose Properties.

2. In the General tab , in the Temporary Internet Files section click Settings.

1. In the Amount of disk space to use enter the number 10 (for 10mb, you can make it smaller or larger if you want). No need to use 600mb…

2. Click Ok.

3. Go to the Advanced tab and look for the Empty Temporary Internet Files check-box. Mark it.

1. Click Ok all the way out.

Copy the I386 source folder to your HD and change the source path

If you installed XP from your CD then whenever it needs a source file (such as when you add an un-installed feature) it will ask you for the CD. You can make life easier if you just copy the I386 source folder from the CD to a partition on your HD.

Follow the next steps:  

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the I386 folder on your installation CD (make sure it’s in the drive you moron!).

2. Right click the I386 folder and choose Copy.

1. Browse to the partition where you want to copy the files to. I use C:\

2. Right click the destination partition or folder and select Paste.

Let it finish to copying process. The folder is approximately 482mb in size (can differ depending on your SP version - read the Windows 2000/XP SP Slipstreaming page for more info).

1. Download THIS zipped file. Extract it and run the enclosed VB script. The script (written by Bill James) will let you change the default path where XP looks for the I386 folder from the original location on the CD to the new destination folder.

Done!

Restore my Desktop icons!

XP hides you regular desktop icons. I don’t know why, but some sick mind in Seattle thought that a desktop without Internet Explorer, My Computer, My Documents and the My Network Places icons looks nicer.

I don’t.

So I want to get them back.

Follow the next steps:  

1. Right-click an empty space on your desktop. Choose Properties.

1. In the Display Properties window go to the Desktop tab and click the Customize Desktop button.

1. In the Desktop Icons section click to select all the icons you want.

1. Click Ok all the way out.

2. Your icons are back.

Get rid of the MSN Passport creation prompt

Windows XP can drive you nuts with the idiotic Passport reminder balloon. If you don’t use Microsoft Messenger for your IM needs, or use a different client (see Replace Windows/MSN Messenger for some examples) then you might want to disable that reminder.

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

Note: As always, before making changes to your registry you should always make sure you have a valid backup. In cases where you’re supposed to delete or modify keys or values from the registry it is possible to first export that key or value(s) to a .REG file before performing the changes.

1. Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MessengerService

1. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

Value Name: PassportBalloon
Value Type: REG_BINARY
Data: 0a (hexadecimal)

Note: 0a as in “zero a” not “oh a”…

1. Close the registry editor.

Get rid of the Tour prompt

The “Take Tour of Windows XP” prompt can drive you mad.

To disable it follow the next steps:  

1. Open the registry editor and go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Tour

1. Create a new value with the name of

RunCount

Data Type: REG_DWORD

1. Give it a value of 0

Customize a new Windows XP installation

When installing a brand new Windows XP Pro computer (read my Install Windows XP Pro page) I end up making many changes to its interface and some of its interior settings.

Some of these changes are for made for performance reasons while others are purely visual and made only for my convenience.

Some of these tips can be easily modified without the need to go into registry changes. For example, in order to disable the “Windows XP Tour” you can simply click on “Cancel” when it first pops up. However, if you want to disable this “feature” for all users on the workstation, or would like to disable if for many computers, you will need to programmatically do it.

Either way, here are some of the steps I take to customize my own XP machine. I did not list ALL available tweaks or changes, I just wrote about the ones that I use the most and that help me get a better working experience with my own XP machine.

BTW, some settings will also work on W2K and Windows 2003.

Xbox Live India launches Nov. 5

The country of India obtains access to Xbox Live beginning November 5. A 12-month subscription to the service will cost 2200 rupees ($55 USD). 1600 MS Points (which is fake currency to begin with), normally $20 in the States, will cost 1070 rupees ($27). Indian XBLA will supposedly be tied into Asia, so if a game is available there, it should be available on the marketplace.

Apparently a key difference between India’s Xbox Live and others is the “educational content.” According to those at the event held at the Shangri-la Hotel in New Delhi, Microsoft announced India will be the first country with learning aids for grades 1-12. We have no idea at this point what that means, but if they being offering XBLA Number Munchers or Oregon Trail in the States, that’s an automatic 400 to 800 MS Points spent right there. And, of course, Bollywood productions will be available through the Xbox Marketplace.

BlueJacking (Mobile Hacking And Tricks)

So lets’s begin with whats blueJacking

First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate the Bluetooth wireless communication system as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres.

So, we’ve got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. ‘Hello, you’ve been bluejacked’, in the ‘Name’ field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying “‘Hello, you’ve been bluejacked’ has just been received by Bluetooth” or something along those lines. For most ‘victims’ they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone. So, personalised messages like ‘I like your pink top’ and the startled expressions that result is where the fun really starts.

 Why Bluejacking

‘Bluejacking’ didn’t simply arise from nowhere. It had to be made up somehow. ‘ajack’ on the Esato mobile phone forums discovered the art of bluejacking many months ago, and since then it has taken off.

At one point in time, when bluejacking was a fresh topic, it didn’t have just one name. About half of the people talking about what we now call bluejacking once called it ‘ajacking’. However, it was soon realised that ‘bluejacking’ had a lot more to do with Bluetooth, so it just stuck as bluejacking.

I will break the word ‘bluejacking’ down for you so it’s easier for you to understand how bluejacking got its name.

blue is taken from Bluetooth, the technology bluejacking uses.

jacking is derived from both “ajack” and “hijacking” even thought bluejacking does not resemble hijacking - there is no accessing or taking private data from your victim’s device.

 BlueJacking Lingo

Bluejacker: Name given to a person during the time they are involved in an exchange

bluejacking: Arh!! I’m ashamed! Go here, quickly, before jellyellie catches you!!

bluejacking encounter: Same as ‘exchange’ but can be used in all tenses

Bluetooth: A short range wireless data connection

Contact: Phone book contact which is sent during an exchange

Encounter: The time in which the bluejacker is bluejacking their victim

Exchange: The period in which the bluejacker sends contacts via Bluetooth to their victim. ‘Exchange’ is often used in the past tense, e.g. “During my exchange I sent a picture to my victim”

Reveal: When the bluejacker makes themselves known to their victim

Victim: Name given to the person whose Bluetooth enabled device is being bluejacked

Blue Jacking Through PC enabled Bluetooth

1. Go to contacts in your Address Book program (e.g Outlook)
2. Create a new contact
3. Enter the message into one of the ‘name’ fields
4. Save the new contact
5. Go to the address book
6. Right-click on the message/contact
7. Go to action
8. Go to Send to Bluetooth
9. Click on other
10. Select a device from the list and double click on it

Motorola A835 Bluejacking Guide

1. Go to Contacts (Default control is down joystick).
2. Press joystick up once to get to ‘[Add Entry]‘
3. Press ‘Select’
4. Highlight ‘Phone Number’

*note 1: The scan has two passes. During the first pass, the phone looks for devices in range. If one is found, it is counted and the scan continues. At the end of the first pass, the phone has the MAC (Media Access Control) addresses of each device in range when the first pass took place. If the scan is interrupted by pressing ‘Stop’, these addresses will be visible.

In the second pass, the phone attempts to retrieve the Bluetooth Name set in each of the devices. If a device has moved out of range or has a marginal signal, the MAC Address is displayed. Please note that some devices’ Bluetooth Names are set to the MAC address by default.

2. Name will be highlighted, change this to the message you want to send and save it

3. Type your message into the “first name” field and complete any other fields you wish to, but remember that not all phones will recognise the number of fields the C500 does!!

8. Highlight the device and select the left hotkey marked “Beam”.

9. The column on the right of the device name should now read “pend”. If you have a successful bluejack it will read “done”. If the contact is rejected it will display “fail”. If the device stays on “pend” for a long time it may be waiting for acceptance, to stop trying to send, highlight it and press the rocker switch in (as if you were trying to select it).

1. Click the Windows / Start icon
2. Select Contacts
3. Select the pre-made contact with the message you want to send
4. In the list that appears, tap and hold the message you want to send, and in the popup box that appears select Beam Contact. If you want to send more than one contact, tap and hold a contact then drag and highlight all the contacts you want to send.
5. On the screen that appears, your message(s) will be displayed, followed by the prompt To beam, select a device. In the list below, any found Infra Red devices will be listed as a red icon, and any Bluetooth devices will be listed as a blue wave icon.
6. Any found devices will be displayed as a MAC address ( 12 digits long ), then after a few seconds the address will change to the devices Bluetooth name if it can be found. To the right of each found device you will see the message Tap to send - simply tap the devices you want to send your message(s) to.
7. Once tapped, the XDA2 will then say Pending while connection is setup, followed by Sending 1/1, followed by Done. The 1/1 bit means you are sending 1 contact out of 1 selected. So if you wanted to send 20 bluejacks, it would say 1/20, then 2/20, 3/20. This should happen very rapidly.
8. Your XDA2 will continue searching until you tell it to stop, so you can sit there all day until either you get bored or the battery runs out. Simply keep tapping to send whenever a device comes into range.
9. To finish bluejacking, simply click OK at the top of the screen.

Disabling Windows XP Built In Firewall!

One of the lamest attempts at a firewall I’ve seen in a long time.  This little thing that Microsoft threw in almost as an afterthought serves little purpose but happens to be buried so deep that most people wouldn’t even know where to find the stupid thing.  Is it better than nothing, yes, but not much better…so shut this off and get a real firewall, check the Freeware Downloads of this website to get a real firewall.  Now on to shutting this stupid thing off: Go to the Control Panel and then to Network Connections…select your network connection and you’ll get something like this:

Okay you get this Window above and then you click Properties…just as a sidenote, yes my computer has been on 6 days straight connected to the internet and my connection is oh so nice.  Now back to disabling the firewall.  Click on Properties and you’ll get here:

      Now click on the advanced tab at the top and then uncheck the “Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet”.  Once you do this Win XP’s lame firewall will be off!  Good, now get a real firewall in the freeware section.  One other thing, don’t think of running this firewall and another software firewall.  Two software firewalls almost always cause conflicts with each other and never really serve much of a purpose…they end up canceling each other out in the end.  You can have a hardware firewall and a software firewall, but I’ll write about this in the future and which combo is best to use.

Closing Error Reporting (Win XP)

     Error reporting, what is it and why does Microsoft want you to have it on?  Basically whenever your computer crashes Win XP makes a little report of what went wrong and then sends it to Microsoft so they can improve the Windows Operating System.  Generally it sounds like a nice idea, but do you really want to be sending reports about your computer to Microsoft?  I personally don’t and they allow you to shut off this feature.  Here’s how you do it:

1. Open your control panel
2. Click on Performance and Maintenance
3. Then click on System
4. Go to the Advance Tab
5. Click on the Error Reporting button at the bottom
6. Select Disable Error Reporting
7. Click the “But notify me when a critical error occurs”
8. Click Ok Twice.

You can leave out step 7, but I like my operating system to tell me when its had a major error, mainly because I can look up the cause of the error and hopefully find a solution to it on the net or at Microsoft.  There you have it, error reporting to Microsoft is off and you don’t have to worry about sending a report to Bill Gates.

Microsofts XBox 360 !!

Microsoft has revealed its new console, the Xbox 360. As can be seen from the picture opposite, the console is smaller, curvy and more stylish than the console before it, with the addition of the PS2 feature of being able to stand vertically or horizontally.

The Xbox 360 can be customised using a variety of faceplates to suit your style or furniture.

As can be seen from the specs, the Xbox 360 boasts a custom-built IBM PowerPC CPU running at 3.2GHz with memory at 512MB RAM. The graphics chip is a custom-built ATI chip capable of advanced antialiasing and shader effects. This means that the Xbox 360 will have the processing power to deliver true 720p and 1080i wide-screen HDTV images for all of its games - similar to what the PS3 can achieve.

Microsoft are set to continue and improve their Xbox Live feature, being available in silver and gold tiers, with the addition of a new feature: Xbox Live Marketplace where users can access a multitude of demos, maps, skins etc. for download. However, there are no details of an additional cost for this service.

Probably the most interesting feature of the Xbox 360 is the Media Center Extender where you can stream video, audio and photos from networked PCs running Windows Media Center Edition. also media can be streamed from portable music players, digital cameras, and Windows XP PCs. Also the Xbox 360 will have a video camera attachment, possibly similar to Sony’s Eye-Toy.

Currently the Xbox 360 retails for around £200. You can have the choice of whether to buy your system with a 20 GB hard drive - its necessity is up for scrutiny but is a useful addition for caching etc.

The Xbox 360 uses the main gaming format, HD-DVD technology compared to the slightly more advanced Blu-ray technology (BD-ROM) used in the PS3. The Xbox 360 is backwards compatible with the top Xbox games.

The Nintendo Wii finally had its details announced, and is an interesting alterantive to both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. For many though, the Wii will be seen as the “family” console rather than the graphical realism and power of the big two.

Finally, here is the latest console from Sony. The PlayStation 3 is powered by the “Cell processor”, which is boasted to be 35 times more powerful than the PS2 (the fine details of the CPU are displayed opposite).

Its graphics is powered by an NVidia graphics chip called an RSX (”Reality Synthesizer”) which operates at 550 MHz core clock with over 300 million transistors, and is claimed to be more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra cards put together.

Comparing the PS3 to the Xbox 360 as far as specifications are considered is near impossible, due to the fact that the GPUs and CPUs are constructed differently. The RSX has a smaller number of pipelines than what the Xbox 360 boasts. But this could mean that they are more powerful - so its difficult to comprehend. The new Nintendo Wii is an even harder comparison, due to the completely different market that the Wii has appealed to.

The online facility, as with the Xbox 360 is an important factor. The PS3 can be played online for free, a positive in comparison with the Xbox 360 Live (a £39.99 subscription a year). However, downloadable files will cost, but this shouldn’t be a major issue for the overall lifetime of you PS3 online experience. The PS3 has connection via Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T) x 3 (input x 1 + output x 2) and wirelessly through Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g.

The controllers on the PS3 are not a redesign as first anticipated, infact the controller looks similar to the old PS2 controller. But the rumble feature of the DualShock does not exist, although it has the ability for wireless (Bluetooth) technology and have a motion sensor, with 6 degrees of freedom (all as standard). The PS3 can accommodate up to 7 players at one time, also additional controllers can be connected to one of up to 6 USB 2.0 ports available (front x4, rear x2). Furthermore, PSP owners will be able to connect their handheld gaming device to a Wi-Fi port as either a controller or an additional screen, perhaps even for viewing tactical information in game.

The system is available in 3 colours shown below; white silver and black. The media format that the games will be stored on is called Blu-ray. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 GB - roughly 5 times more storage than a standard single-layer DVD. The Blu-ray drive will support all Blu-ray formats (BD-ROM/BD-R/BD-RE) and be backward compatible with current CD and DVD formats to enable “some” PS2 games to be played (Sony say 200 do not work). As well as this flexibility, what really separates the PS3 from the Xbox 360 is the fact that the console doubles up as a Blu-ray DVD player. At the moment the benefits of such a system has not reached its full potential, but can be just as successful as the PS2 was to DVDs (providing that Blu-ray stays competitive with HD-DVDs).

The PS3 comes with the choice of a non-removable 20GB or 60GB hard drive, giving a retail value of ~£350 (TBC) or £425 respectively - which is quite considerable compared to the varied figures being banded around. Also note that the 20GB version has no HDMI ports and no WiFi, which cannot be upgraded (unlike the Xbox 360 which can). This means with the cheaper version, the maximum resolution will be restricted to 1080i (the max with HDMI ports being 1080p). Having a resolution of 1080p is the smoothest and clearer picture, therefore the 60GB is recommended. What should also be priced-in is a 2nd controller (£30) and couple of games (£80), which gives an overall total of £535!

After a couple of years this console will easily be considered value for money. A reduction in price coupled with Bluray movies being its partial sucessor to DVDs, there’s no reason why it can be everyone’s no. 1 choice - but would that be too late?.

First Impressions: Apple iPhone

 

New kid on the block packs a huge punch to the world of wireless..

On June 29th Apple Computer made a huge step into the world of mobility by announcing the Apple iPhone. The iPhone’s functions include those of a camera phone, a multimedia player and mobile phone. Of course it also offers Internet services including e-mail, text messaging, web browsing, Visual Voicemail and local “Wi-Fi” connectivity. Apple being the innovative company that they are has filed more than 200 patents related to the technology behind the iPhone. The iPhone is a 2.5G quad-band GSM phone, though Apple has stated a “plan to make 3G phones”.
